The installation SPONGY STORIES consists of an intra-action between a naturally dyed (with the batik method) quilt, other visitors, pandan sponge cakes, a wall text and ceramic objects. The batik designs on the carpet refer to the dye plants from THE BLUE CARPET. A few cutouts in the cloth allow one to see the earth underneath. The wall text is written by artist-writer Erik Benjamins and focuses on sponges: the first multicellular animals, important and often overlooked ancestors of humans. The text, in combination with certain actions and a sensory experience of the environment, helps to create an embodied ‘situatedness’ and a connection with the stories of the sponge.
